Start with the numbers
A 24×30 slab is 720 sq ft. At 4 inches (0.333 ft) you’ll place ~ 8.9 cubic yards; at 5 inches (0.417 ft), ~ 11.1 yards. But yardage is just one line item. In Lamont we price the system: subgrade prep, base, thickness/reinforcement, access (pump vs. direct), joint plan, hot-weather controls, and curing.
Common configurations by use
- Patio/utility slab: 4 in. 3,000–3,500 PSI with fiber, 3–4 in. Class II base, broom finish, joints at 8–10 ft. Shop or heavy utility: 5 in. 4,000 PSI with #3/#4 rebar @ 18–24 in.; dowels at tie-ins; joints at 10–12 ft; same-day saw cuts.
Cost drivers you should define up front
- Base import/compaction: One of the largest labor components—and your best durability investment. Reinforcement and dowels: Layout time and material; don’t skip dowels at garage/apron if you’re tying in. Access/logistics: Tight gates, hose runs, or pump setup; schedule truck spacing for continuous placement. Finish: Light broom with tooled border is cost-effective and cool underfoot; stamping adds crew and timing demands. Hot-weather plan: Dawn placement, shade/wind breaks, retarder as needed, curing membrane at sheen loss.
Jointing for 24×30 (what we actually cut)
At 4 inches, break the field into panels ~8–10 ft; at 5 inches, ~10–12 ft. For a clean look, use a 3×3 or 2×3 grid aligned to doors, posts, and borders. Keep the saw onsite; in our region, many slabs need same-day cuts to avoid random cracking.
Drainage and edge details
Pitch away from structures, route downspouts, and keep sprinklers off edges during early life. Consider a gravel drip strip next to planters to reduce splash and staining.
